We recently got a surprise menu update for a place we had been kind of avoiding due to the lack of great vegan options – Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe. This update gave us an all-new dedicated vegan option – the Masa Flatbread and a few sides and modifiable options as well! Keep reading as we review them all and share them with you.
Vegan Options at Pecos Bill
First up, the vegan as-is Grilled Masa Flatbread. You can order this via mobile order or in person at the register. This is a huarache-style corn masa flatbread base, with vegan pepper jack cheese, stewed pinto beans, sweet potatoes, pico de gallo, shredded lettuce and plant-based lime crema.
In addition to the vegan Grilled Masa Flatbread at Pecos Bill, there are some vegan side items. The cilantro-lime rice is marked plant-based and vegan as-is. The charros beans come with queso fresco, but if you order it without the cheese, it’s vegan. We didn’t order it, since we tried the beans both on the flatbread and the rice bowl. The cilantro-lime rice is the same from the rice bowl as well.
It is important to note that the barbecue cheddar fries have some sort of seasoning mix with the barbecue and cheese together, so if you order it without, you are basically getting plain fries. Also, the guacamole is pre-packaged, one of those little cups, so we did not order that either. Lastly, the tamale option cannot be modified since the tamale itself contains cheese inside it.
Modified Vegan Options at Pecos Bill
Now, onto the modifiable vegan options at Pecos Bill.
The Southwest Caesar Salad and the Rice Bowl are part of the Create Your Own meals available by mobile order or in person. However, the app is currently not prepared to let guests order the rice bowl or the salad without adding a meat protein. You can order them in person and just request no protein and no cheese.
With the salad, you’ll have to ask for no dressing, no cheese, and then ask for either a side of the lime crema from the flatbread or one of the dressings they have like the Ken’s balsamic vinaigrette or fat free Italian. I know that may sound like a lot, but the salad is great and comes with pepitas and tortilla strips, and the pico on top makes it really unique.
For the rice bowl, order it without the queso fresco, and no added meat protein and you’re good to go. The “cowboy caviar” is basically pico de gallo with black beans and corn added. It makes for a great tasting bowl.
The nachos can also be made vegan, you’d have to remove the queso and any cheese, so it would be tortilla chips and pico de gallo, but you could ask for a side of the vegan lime crema and they would be a good shareable snack! We didn’t get them last night, but will definitely try that next time and update this post. And that’s it! Hopefully we will get a vegan dessert here at some point or they’ll fix the app so we can mobile order everything we are able to going forward.
Let me know if you try any of these options and what you think. Thanks for reading!
