Canyon jail, pony rides and tables piled high with ketchup bottles is what you’ll find at this rip roarin western eatery. There’s a very unique all-you-can-eat vegan option inside Whispering Canyon Cafe and we’re taking you along with us to experience it.
Strap in, cause this here’s the wildest restaurant in the Wilderness…… Lodge.
Vegan Food Review: Whispering Canyon Cafe at Walt Disney World
You can find Whispering Canyon Cafe on the main level of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort at Walt Disney World. The restaurant has an open plan that looks out across the lobby while the other side of the restaurant has huge picture windows looking out over some of the resort’s lush greenery.
The restaurant, much like the resort has a northwestern feel with grey stone and large exposed wooden beams.
Whispering Canyon Cafe Atmosphere
The big draw for vegans dining here is the all-you-can-eat vegan skillet. The skillet debuted in July of 2018. We were there the day they started serving it and it was very well received. Here are a few photos from that day. Keep scrolling to see how the skillet has changed over the years.
Whispering Canyon Cafe Vegan Food Options
We used to kick off dinner off with a vegan vanilla milkshake. Ice cream options included Rice Dream and Toffuti. Regular milkshakes are bottomless. Vegan milkshakes were not.
We have since heard that they won’t make vegan milkshakes for guests. Let us know if you have any luck ordering one.
Here’s how the ($34) All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Vegan Skillet used to come…
At dinner time the skillet was served with a side salad and warm vegan cornbread. We thought that the meal would be paced and that we would receive the bread service first, then the salad and then the entree, however everything was brought to the table all at once.
The salad was a mix of basic greens with shaved purple cabbage and carrots, a few cherry tomatoes and two generous sections of Granny Smith apple. It was dressed with an apple vinaigrette.
This salad is sadly no longer an option.
The skillet pictured below was for one person and came loaded with corn, green beans, potato wedges, Gardein chick’n, Gardein beefless tips, Beyond sausage and BBQ pulled jackfruit.
The Beyond sausage was the real stand out and we ended up asking the server for more. All you can eat. No problemo. It was our first time trying Beyond sausage and let me tell you, we were thoroughly impressed.
Here’s a close up cross section so you can see the texture. Uncanny how much this resembles the real deal.
The potatoes were perfectly tender and lightly seasoned. The corn and green beans were also delicious. The Gardein chick’n was dressed with a bit of herbs and was moist and flavorful. The Gardein beefless tips had been tossed lightly in barbecue sauce.
Least favorite was the BBQ pulled jackfruit. It had a good texture but tasted a bit too much like a canned product. The brine overpowered the sauce it sat in. If this was wrapped inside of a flour tortilla with a bit of creamy vegan coleslaw it would have been much better, but as a stand alone it didn’t work.
The updated 2020 version of the All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Vegan Skillet does not have the corn and the Gardein beefless tips are only offered in the dinner skillet. Instead of corn guests receive roasted bell peppers and charred carrots. The potatoes have also been changed in their presentation from wedges to whole potatoes. Shoutout to my friend ZannaLand for this updated pic.
The pièce de résistance of the meal is the warm vegan cornbread. Which is now served at both lunch and dinner, where in the past it was only served at lunch.
This offering is $24 at lunchtime and $34 during dinner.
Ask your server to smuggle you a slice to take home.
There is a vegan burger offered as well.
Also on deck here is a vegan Maple-Chipotle Barbecue-braised Jackfruit Dip which you’ll find on the appetizer section of the menu.
Your dessert option is a Rice Milk Panna Cotta ($9) topped with strawberries and marionberries.
I highly recommend Whispering Canyon Cafe, especially when dining with friends and family who aren’t vegan. The atmosphere is a little boisterous, but if that doesn’t bother you you’re gonna absolutely love your vegan experience here.
