Trattoria al Forno has been a showcase of Italian favorites since December of 2014, when it took the place of Cat Cora’s restaurant, Kouzzina. Located directly on the boardwalk at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, it features an open kitchen. With its authentic dishes, including house-made pastas and wood-fired pizzas, Trattoria quickly became a popular spot for good Italian food. We have several reviews of the vegan items available at Trattoria al Forno for breakfast and dinner here. Today we’re sharing a new menu item – a Mickey-shaped vegan flatbread pizza!
Once we saw that this was a new menu item, we had to rush over and check it out ourselves, to get the details for you. As it turns out, the Mickey-shaped pizza is actually a kids menu item. It comes as is on the menu as a Mickey-shaped cheese pizza or pepperoni pizza for $12. However, it IS modifiable to be a vegan option as well. It will just be a little different. Here’s the scoop:
Because the pizza dough is not vegan at Trattoria al Forno, the vegan version will be more of a focaccia-style flatbread, similar to the vegan flatbread at AbracadaBar which we recently reviewed and loved. There is not vegan mozzarella at either location, so you can get a lovely pizza with sauce and veggies, or if available, you can ask for some of the vegan ricotta used at AbracadaBar. When we were there, they were all out of the vegan ricotta, so it’s not pictured on our pizza.
Another thing to note is, because this is made to order, it may take a little longer. We mobile ordered this pizza, selecting the regular kids cheese pizza, but then had to let them know that we wanted the vegan version. Of course if you are dining inside the restaurant, you can let the server know or ask to speak to a chef.
The pizza we were served was huge, and way more than a normal kids meal. You could definitely make a meal out of it or share with friends and family. Since this is a new menu item, that could of course change over time as they refine the preparation. The chef we spoke with was very nice and added some red onions, peppers, sundried tomatoes, and basil to our pizza.
If you enjoy the flatbread at AbracadaBar, you will love this pizza too. The dough is very fluffy and full of flavor and the Mickey shape just adds to the fun of course. Each ear was pretty much a mini personal pizza, so again, plenty to share with friends or family.
