A few months back, we shared with you a delightful new offering at Kusafiri Coffee Shop in the Harambe section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom – a spiced potato hand pie – well now that has been replaced by a vegan Impossible Empanada at the same location. Originally a temporary menu item created for the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, for whatever reason, Disney has decided to keep the empanada, and nix the potato version. While the empanada is delicious, many of us are wishing we could have the potato hand pie back or – gasp – have both options available?! I’m not sure if it’s because of the Impossible partnership Disney is a part of, or that these are selling better than the potato version, but I sure wish we could have both options available.
The Impossible Empanada uses the same thick dough as the spiced potato hand pie, but this filling is a plant-based Picadillo made with Impossible meat. The spices are fairly similar to the potato, with flavors of cumin, onions and potatoes, but Picadillo adds tomatoes and even golden raisins to the mix, along with the Impossible meat. So it’s a slightly different flavor profile over the curry-type flavor of the potato on its own. You get two empanadas, served with tomato-based dipping sauce. It’s still quite good, and I’m glad we have this option, but would love the return of the potato as well!
Keep in mind this is available at Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery, which is open for breakfast at 9am (only offering a fruit cup for vegans) and starts serving this empanada at 10:30am, closing at 5pm. The Spiced Potato Hand Pie is still listed on the My Disney Experience mobile app menu for this location…but every cast member we spoke to recently seems to agree the Impossible empanada is staying. Time will tell! Have you tried this vegan Impossible Empanada or the Spiced Potato Hand Pie? Which was your favorite?
