Plant-based Vegan Soba Noodle Waffle Bowl at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is kind of tied for first place in vegan options at the parks along with EPCOT and there is a new Plant-based Soba Noodle Salad in a Waffle Bowl that keeps it in the running. At DHS, you have the fan favorite Felucian Garden Spread Kefta at Docking Bay 7, along with the options from Woody’s Lunch Box, Rosie’s All-American Cafe, PizzeRizzo, and Backlot Express, not to mention the table service locations.

That said, Fairfax Fare over in Sunset Blvd. added something about a year ago that was confusing to say the least. In an attempt to simulate a “Chicago style hot dog” they created the Chicago Style Hot Dog Salad – yes, salad. I did not get to experience this myself, for some reason I never had the desire to give it a try with all the other options in Hollywood Studios.

However, that is all now in the past as Disney has now come out with some new menu items at Fairfax Fare – and they are all served in waffle bowls. Disney promoted these new items as a twist on “chicken & waffles” but there’s only one chicken-based bowl, and it’s buffalo, so not really a chicken & waffle combo. Regardless, we now have a new vegan option – the cold Soba Noodles salad in a waffle bowl. You can also add plant-based chicken to this dish if you’d like, for an extra $1.

Vegan Soba Noodle Waffle Bowl

We tried this out the other night, and realized that you cannot actually add the plant-based chicken to your mobile order, so you’d have to order that at the register if you want the chicken, which I do think is a good addition and tastes great.

Here is the Soba Noodle Salad Bowl without the additional plant-based chicken:

Then I realized I wasn’t able to order it and we asked at the window. She said there was no way to add it after but kindly gave us some chicken on the side to add to our bowls. I’m so glad she did because I think the chick’n is a great addition and I appreciate when we’re able to add protein to our vegan dishes.

I was expecting chopped up vegan chicken nuggets or strips, but this was a shredded, non-breaded style chicken, which tasted amazing. I wish they would immediately add this to the ‘Ohana skillet and other places where they add non-breaded plant-based chicken. We did ask the brand name and were not able to get the answer, it was too soon to even have the allergy binder up when we went. We will check back.

The noodles themselves were a little underdone/chewy, but I get that that is necessary to keep them in bulk and ready to serve. The fact that they are served cold makes a difference too, but I really enjoyed the taste and the veggies are a good mix. The sauce is very heavy, but I’d prefer that to dry noodles.

That just leaves the serving bowl…a real ice cream style waffle bowl. I love the creativity and the fun factor, but the waffle bowl itself is really sweet, so when you eat it with the noodles, it’s kind of a stranger combo. I’m not really going to complain tho, I’d rather have this than a single-use plastic bowl that doesn’t get recycled.

Gertie the Dino Christmas

This meal is herbivore Gertie the Dino approved!

While I may not choose this over the other vegan options at Disney’s Hollywood Studios all the time, I’m glad to see it’s a more palatable addition thank a hot dog salad, which was kind of an insult to plant-based diners everywhere in my opinion. I do love a good teriyaki sauce, and between this and the tofu rice bowl at Backlot Express, Studios has us covered.
