When you think “New Jersey style deli” do vegan options come to mind? Yeah, not for me either. But! Disney Parks Blog recently announced the new BoardWalk Deli and now its doors are open at Disney’s BoardWalk. This location, previously the BoardWalk Bakery, is inspired by the delis of the Northeast region, with a menu that takes you on a road trip of classic sweet and savory flavors from New York to the Jersey Shore.
First up, on the breakfast side of the BoardWalk Deli, a vegan Plant-based Ciabatta Sandwich with “egg” Florentine, plant-based cheese, tomato jam, and arugula that provides an exciting contrast of flavors. The ciabatta is made in-house. The gluten-free option for bread unfortunately contains eggs. The cheese is Follow Your Heart brand and the egg is Just Egg.
This sandwich is slightly similar to the Harvest Breakfast sandwich over at Artist’s Palette in Saratoga Springs, so it’s great to see more vegan quick-service breakfast items for sure! We tried this sandwich on opening day and absolutely loved it. The flavors all melded together so well and the pepper jack cheese gave it a nice kick. The tomato jam is also a fun addition as the sweetness is a great contrast to the savory Just Egg and pepper jack flavors. We will definitely be getting this again, it’s a great option on the way to EPCOT or if you’re staying around the BoardWalk Resort. The sandwich is served whole, I cut it for the photos and videos I took, just so you know when you order it.
Next up, a plant-based twist on a classic favorite, the Veggie Crunch Muffaletta is stacked with cured and pickled root vegetables, an olive-giardiniera tapenade and plant-based cheese, served on focaccia. To create a vegan option using just vegetables is a win in my book. I also had this opening day and loved it. Thank you to Disney for thinking of us with these BoardWalk Deli items, I really assumed we’d have nothing to choose from based on the theming!
If you enjoy pickled or vinegar-based dishes, you’ll want to give this a try. It was so satisfying on fresh focaccia bread with the same pepper jack vegan cheese from the breakfast sandwich. Personally, I love those types of flavors, so this sandwich was delicious to me. As you can see it seeps into the bottom bun a bit, but it didn’t fall apart or anything on me, and was really manageable. This photo above is two sandwiches stacked together.
The root vegetables used in this sandwich are from Chef’s Garden Farm in Huron, Ohio which has quite an interesting backstory. Thanks to Breedlove from AllEars for telling us about that at the opening!
In addition to the two sandwiches, there are also off-menu vegan and allergy-friendly blueberry and chocolate chip muffins available on request at the BoardWalk Deli. Stay tuned here and on our @VeganDisneyFood instagram stories and posts for more vegan Disney coverage. Here’s our video review:
